Australian Food Business Collapses, Putting 500 Jobs At Risk

Unemployment has dropped in Australia

HS Fresh Food, a prominent farming business in Australia, has entered voluntary administration, jeopardising around 500 jobs.

The company, which specialised in fresh salads, ready-made meals, snacks, food-to-go, and pre-prepared vegetable products, collapsed on June 14.

FTI Consulting administrators Vaughan Strawbridge, Joanne Dunn, and Ben Campbell have been appointed to restructure the struggling company.

HS Fresh Food’s well-known brands, including Houston's Farm, Sunfresh, and Gourmet Selections, supply major retailers such as Coles and Woolworths.

The administrators work with the management team, staff, and other stakeholders to keep operations running while securing the company’s future.

Mr. Strawbridge said: "We are working with HS Fresh Food Group's management team and staff, and other stakeholders to continue operations while we secure the future of the business.”

When the administrators were appointed, a sale process for the business and assets of HS Fresh Food was already underway and in advanced stages.

Mr. Strawbridge added: “We are working with HS Fresh Food Group's management team and staff, and other stakeholders to continue operations while we secure the future of the business.

“A sale process for the business and assets of the HS Fresh Food Group was undertaken and in advanced stages at the time our appointment.

“We intend to continue this process, while exploring all available options, and are confident of completing a sale and/or recapitalisation of the business in an expedited time frame with the support of all relevant stakeholders.”

HS Fresh Food began as Houston's Farms in Tasmania.

It expanded its operations to New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, and Western Australia.

The company’s collapse marks a significant event in the Australian fresh food supply chain.

Major impacts are expected on its workforce and retail partners.
