OpenAI And Time’s New Deal Brings Over A Century Of Articles To ChatGPT

OpenAI and Time magazine have announced a "multi-year content deal," granting OpenAI access to over a century's worth of Time’s current and archived articles.

This partnership will enable OpenAI to display Time's content within its ChatGPT chatbot.

This will enhance user interactions by providing relevant, high-quality information.

The agreement also allows the company to use Time’s content to improve its AI models, with proper citations and links back to the original sources.

Time will gain access to OpenAI's advanced technology to develop new products for its audience, broadening its digital innovation capabilities.

This collaboration echoes a similar arrangement OpenAI made with News Corp. in May.

It provided access to a vast array of articles from outlets like The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, Barron’s, and The New York Post.

Additionally, Reddit partnered with OpenAI, allowing the training of AI models on its extensive content.

However, these partnerships come amid ongoing legal challenges for AI companies over alleged copyright infringements.

In December, The New York Times sued Microsoft and OpenAI for unlawfully using its journalistic content for ChatGPT’s training data.

The Times is seeking substantial damages for what it claims is the unauthorized use of its valuable works.

The company has refuted these allegations.

Furthermore, in 2023, a group of well-known US authors, including Jonathan Franzen, John Grisham, George R.R. Martin, and Jodi Picoult, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI.

They claim that their works were used without permission to train ChatGPT.

Following this, in July, two additional authors launched a similar lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging their books were utilized without consent for AI training.
